Tribute to Donald Westlake

I was so sorry to read today that the amazingly talented and gracious Donald Westlake has died.  His wonderful novel SPY IN THE OINTMENT is one of my all-time favorites.  If you don't laugh out loud reading it, you don't have a funny bone in your whole body.  I met the man years ago at New York is Book Country when I stood in line with a stack of books for him to sign.  As I approached, spaz that I am, my stack toppled over and I had to pick them all up again.  Right in front of one of my idols.  Without missing a beat, he quipped, "That's funny; I've always considered myself light reading."  If I loved him before, I adored him just then.

So, here's to Donald Westlake.  If you haven't read him, do.  Seriously.  Or, not so seriously.  He'd like that.

I've read a lot of his Richard Stark novels. It's a shame. 75 isn't that old these days.
